Watch MeI've felt the need to post a political blog for quite a while now but have never quite had enough time or energy to sit down and type it out. Everytime a political issue crops up, people ask me if I'm a Republican or Democrat. They always look at me weird when I say, "Neither." In fact, I tried to register to vote as Communist the first time I ever went to the polls. Unfortunately, my aunt was running the registration booth and called my dad and he called me and it was this whole family drama thing and in the end I wound up registering as Independent. All statements aside, I am currently registered to vote as a Libertarian. But that encompasses a wide variety of peoples and beliefs and I just wanted to get mine out there for the world to see.
So... what issues are important to me? What do I want from the government? What do I want to see done with and to the country that I was (unfortunately) born in? In one word, NOTHING. More specifically, the government has embroiled itself into so many people's affairs that it's resources are stretched to capacity and it's hemmhoraging monies like a sieve. I would like to see the government remove its collective fingers from some pies and take care of its own issues first!
I believe that the government should be LESS involved in people's personal lives. I believe that the government SHOULD exist for a few basic purposes, or has grown to fill them:
1. Interstates. Our country THRIVES on interstate travel these days. Unfortunately, not every state has the money necessary to properly maintain them, either from lack of money, or from an abundance of interstate highways. Each state also has its own guidelines for road safety and construction guidelines. Part of the beauty of an interstate system is that you know you will have a wide laned, shallow shouldered, even road with lots of guard rails and reflector posts in any state that you're in, wherever convenient. (I know a few stretches in the mountains that defy some of those qualities but there's only so much you can do with geology! XD) To keep them this way, the government oversees all the regulations, and helps provide funding to states that need the help keeping the interstates up to code, and, pardon the pun, up to speed.
2. Armed Forces. The military service is, and should be, entirely run by the government, for the defense of the country's peoples and borders. I don't think I really need to say a whole lot on this topic, because this is one of the few places that the government actually functions in a way I think it ought to.
3. Education, Medical Care, and utilities. These are the things that make civilized life possible, and help it perpetuate itself. The more education and medical care and access to utilities like electricity, heat, and running water, the higher the literacy rate becomes, the longer the lifespan becomes, the lower the death rate gets, the suicide rate drops, unemployment lowers. Now I don't necessarily believe that the government should PROVIDE these things to the people, but I believe that one of the major responsibilities of a government is to do everything in its power to make these three things accessible and affordable to EVERYONE. It should monitor these things to make sure that the quality of the service is maintained, that it's easy to get these things, and is affordable so that people can use them whenever they need them.
I totally support the socialized medicine and education of some other countries, but I doubt that the people in America would be willing to support such a high tax burden, and there's so much geographical area to maintain, it would be a drain on the government in the worst way.
However, there are some areas I see that need MAJOR change of policy.
1. Welfare. The welfare system disgusts me. It teaches people that they don't have to work. They can be lazy and addicted to alcohol and drugs and it's okay because the government will pay the bills for them and buy food for them and EVEN give them a check every month and keep them in forties and crack rocks. It's created a society of people who, instead of working hard to make changes in their lives, stand around with their arms held up for hand-outs, for free money, and expect everything to be given to them. It's created the society of lawsuit-happy idiots because people are now raised with the "American Dream" of becoming rich overnight! They don't work, they don't respect anyone, and they don't respect property, because they've never had to work, they've never earned respect, and they don't know the true value of a dollar.
I tell you, I know it. Because I've worked my back and hips and knees and feet and hands raw and bloody for every red cent of that god-damned dollar and it makes me want to vomit to see my hard-earned money yanked straight out of MY hands, the hands that EARNED that dollar, and handed over to some fat-assed bimbo to support her eight kids from seven men, and she's never had a damned job in her entire miserable life. I'm sorry.. if you're THAT broke... ya should have stopped at one kid and had your tubes tied, honey. Or, you could go out and get WORK like the rest of us do. I honestly believe people that have litters of children (Jon and Kate, Octomom, I'm looking at you...) are criminals. They're drains on society and are doing their damndest to see that their lineage does the most damage to the planet before anyone else. People who breed like feral cats, acting on some self-centered urge to clone themselves are selfish, and refusing to accept the reality of the world we live in. And then to ask me to hand over MY tax dollars to help support people who compulsively spawn and don't have the decency to have themselves sterilized or at least use the cheaper (AND EASILY OBAINABLE) contraceptive methods is a slap in the face. This isn't 1830 and 60 per cent of your offspring aren't going to die before adulthood.
I also believe that you shouldn't get an income-tax bonus reward for breeding. Maybe people who DON'T drain on society and the ecology should get rewared instead, hmm? Or maybe a tax break for up to the first two, then no more rewards after that... but you could get federal aid to pay for a vasectomy or tubal ligation. That would be excellent.

*** Addendum:
I'm not saying that welfare in of itself is bad. The system was designed to give struggling families a leg up. I just think the way the government executes it is wrong and that maybe the way it's run should be better delegated to the states. I didn't say it should go away.. it just needs a MAJOR housecleaning.
One thing I'd like to see is instead of welfare CHECKS, a debit card that you can only use to buy FOOD (but NOT candy and pop and trash food) and life essentials like diapers and medicines and socks and underwear. I just hate to see people come cash that monthly check and take it across the street to the gas station for cigarettes and a case of Mountain Dew, and then up the block to the liquor store. ><
I'm not saying that A welfare system makes people lazy and worthless... I'm saying that OURS, because of how many people are on it, and because no limits are set to how long they can use it, what they can buy with it, etc etc. I strongly believe you should have to pass a breathalyzer to pick up the dang check, and persons with KNOWN drug problems should recieve funded-for counseling to help them kick the habit so government money isn't spent on cocaine and meth. I too know many hard working people on welfare because life has left them in the shitter and no matter how many jobs they work and how much they scrimp and go without, they just can't get ahead. Welfare was DESIGNED for people like that. Everybody else needs to get off that particular pony.... before it explodes, taking everyone with it! Heck, maybe even part of the welfare program could be small, free classes on how to budget, shop, and save money so that people who just don't have a clue can help themselves! I mean, fuck, the damn schools sure don't teach anybody what to DO with the money they're supposed to go out and earn with their shiny new educations!
My mom thinks that Welfare programs need to be run by churches. The idea has some merit... since they need to be doing something with all that money they get.

Me personally, I would sell my children into sex slavery before asking help from a Church. Because they'd take it as leverage against you to try and get you to attend their services and meetings and all the possibilities of owing something to a church creep me out. :/
2. Drug Policy. I'm also disgusted by how many good men and women, productive members of society, have become felons because of nonviolent crime. Specifically, the crime of marijuana posession. How the hell is possessing a natural substance that grows in nature on par with multiple homicide, rape, arson, and grand theft auto? It's shocking to see how many tax dollars go into fighting this "war on drugs" that is doing an even WORSE job today at controlling drug use than the country did at its creation in the seventies!!! Quit wasting money, put your dicks away, and go find a real crime to fight. If people want to smoke pot and you don't have the cojones to make it legal, reduce it to a misdemeanor and charge a $700 fine every time they get caught. At least you'll be generating revenue that way. Cut out the felony bullshit.
3. The prison system. Goes hand-in hand with the above topic. There are buttloads of people serving way much more time than they deserve because some idiot in this country came up with the idea of Mandatory Minimum Sentencing. Each criminal and each crime should be taken on a case-by-case basis, and sentenced as such. If a guy gets busted for having child pornography, has a history of felonies and assaults, has a history of inappropriate behavior around children, and was molested as a child.. maybe he should do some time because it's only a matter of time before he hurts a kid. If a man with a long marriage and several kids and no history of law problems and a good job gets busted for kiddie porn and his evaluation shows an extremely addictive personality but no danger of harm to anyone, including kids.. maybe he ought to do some inpatient time at a rehab clinic instead, yes? NOT IN THIS COUNTRY!!! NO LOGIC ALLOWED HERE!!! Mandatory minimums are a waste of government money, too, by keeping people in prison longer than they really need to be. The prison system also should go hand in hand with vocational schools, rehab centers, and secondary education, so that criminals have a chance to learn to be better and do better outside, and reduce this country's ridiculous recidivism rate.
4. Elections. In this age of technology, I would like to see us become a true Democracy, in which every person's vote ACTUALLY counted, instead of being a Democratic Republic, in which elected officials actually vote, only taking under advisement the opinions of the persons they represent. I hate voting because I know my votes do not count. I live in a heavily Republican state and we have never, that I can remember, ever voted Democratic, in any election.
5. Churches. Churches in this country are too uppity. They think they own the place, and constantly make campaign donations to further their causes. Several of them operate in such a way that violates their status as non-profit and voids their tax-exempt status, but none of them ever PAY the taxes, and the IRS never gets them for back taxes. I also believe that the word "god" or "gods" have no place on any Federal Building, that it should not be on our money, and that there should not be a Bible in courthouses or schools. Religion should be a private thing, between a person and their own God, whichever one they choose. It has no place in government function.
6. Privacy. The government needs to mind a little more of it's own business. Quit listening in on shit that don't involve you, ya hear me?!
7. Marriage. I believe all marriage should be secular and commonlaw. As in, the court part required, the church part optional, and the legally binding stuff coming from the court part. If God doesn't want gays to marry, fine then, they can skip the covenant with God and go straight to the filing jointly, adopting children, and inheriting property bit. Marriage isn't a sacred institution. It's a joke, created by the church as another way of controlling its sheep.. I mean flock.. I mean congregation. If two consenting, sober, adults want to commit their finances, insurance, and legal documents until divorce bid them part, so be it. The pact to love and honor and cherish forever is PRIVATE and none of the business of the government... just like the church has no damn business say who can and can't file joint taxes and carry right of survivorship.
8. Abortion. This is a private medical procedure that carries grave mental, physical, and emotional consequences. The women who feel that it's their only choice need NO DAMN INPUT from anyone, not the government, not some idiot standing in the street with a picket sign of a murdered baby. (Honestly, I think THOSE morons need to be taken to jail for child abuse... I cannot tell you the number of angry parents I know having to field questions from small children about those hideous pictures. Just like it's nobody's business to teach your kid about sex, it's also nobody's business to show your kid horror movies, gore, or abortion.) It's between her and her doctor and MAYBE the baby's father, but everybody else needs to go away, stfu, and mind their own business. I swear, if you tried to picket mastectomies, colonoscopies, or gallbladder removal, people would call you an idiot and laugh you off the street.. so why do people give these time-wasters so much credit?
This country was founded by a group of people who had been harshly and violently persecuted, prosecuted, hunted, and penalized for wanting to have the freedom of choice. They had a way of worshiping God that was different than what everyone else was doing, and they wanted to create a land where people could go and live a free life, where they could make their own choices, where they would be free from religious intolerance, debtor's prisons, and hefty taxes. The laws they set up and their behaviors at the time were influenced by society's mores and their church's laws but they created a living Constitution to guide the country because they KNEW that as the years passed, things would change. They knew that we would discover new things, develop new technologies, think new ideas and they wanted the government of this country to grow and adapt with the world.... WITHOUT betraying or abandoning those ideals they felt were important:
- That no part of the government should have too much power.
- That the people of the USA should be able to choose who represents and leads them.
- That should the government become too corrupt or too powerful, the people have the right to rise up and overthrow it.
- That for this purpose, the people shall always have the right to say or print their opinions and to own or carry arms and armaments.
- That religion and churches should have no part in how the government functions.
- That every man, woman, and child in this country, has the right to live, be happy, be free, and be free to make their own choices in the pursuit of that happiness.
- That it should be hard but not impossible, to add changes to the Constitution, in order to keep it in synch with the times, as they change.
- That government and law officials cannot search or sieze your property unless they suspect you have committed a crime.
- That should a citizen be a accused of a crime, he or she has a right to be tried fairly, once, in due speed, and not be charged excessive fines or be punished cruelly.
- Each state is able to excercise its own laws and function independently.
- That just because a right isn't stated in the laws, consitution, or amendments, doesn't mean it's been denied the people. (Ie, the people in the country can do whatever, unless it's been specifically prohibited by laws saying you can't do it.)
They wanted to create a strong country that could defend itself from abroad with the military, and domestically, from itself, using the citizens. In this day and age, I see us giving up far too many of our rights and allowing the government and president to take on far too much power. I suspect that the Founding Fathers would be shocked and appalled if they could see the mockery we've made of their bright ideas. When I die and see them on the other side, my first words will be "I'm sorry."
